The theme of the current family of banknotes — an effigy of the Republic on the front and Brazilian animals on the back.
Obverse: Effigy of the Republic, portrayed as a sculpture. At the top of the watermark area along the upper left side of the note there is the legend "BANCO CENTRAL DO BRASIL" (Central Bank of Brazil). The numerical indication of the denomination "1 REAL" at center and at upper right.
Signatures: Antonio Palocci Filho (1st signature type - MINISTRO DA FAZENDA - Minister of Finance) and Henrique de Campos Meirelles (PRESIDENTE DO BANCO CENTRAL DO BRASIL - President of the Central Bank of Brazil).
Reverse: Picture of a Hummingbird (Amazilia lactea). Beija-flor - Hummingbird feeding chicks in nest. It is found mainly in South America and more than a hundred species are found in Brazil. The face value "1" at bottom left and upper right and the denomination in words "UM REAL" (ONE REAL) at bottom center.
Watermark: Flag of Brazil.
Coinciding Register: Coat of arms of Brazil. Hold the banknote up to light and you will see that the image of the Coat of Arms shows up complete. The parts printed on the back perfectly match the ones on the front.
Dimensions: 140 x 65 mm.
Predominant color: Black, olive-green, and blue-green on aqua and pale green underprint.
